CENTENNIA Working Model QUICK START:

WINDOWS OR MACINTOSH:
Just double-click on the Centennia icon. If you have downloaded this demo
from an online service or from the Internet, you will probably find the icon
in the "download" directory for your online access software.

DOS VERSIONS:
From the DOS prompt, type "centdos". If your mouse is not active, you need
to load it in your autoexec file or just use the keyboard controls. To
select menu items from the keyboard just hit the underlined letter in
each command. For example to exit Centennia after it starts up, hit the
'F' key to open the File menu, the 'X' to select the Exit item. Take a
look at 'keyboard Use' under the 'Help' menu.

Try clicking on the time-control buttons near the bottom of the screen.
You can also use the '+' and '-' keys to single-step through time. To
STOP the time-evolution, hit the ENTER key on your keyboard.

ALL VERSIONS:
The Centennia Working Model is a complete copy of the software except that
it is limited in time coverage to the Napleonic period. You can follow the
march of French armies from just after the Revolution, through the rise of
Napoleon's great French Empire, his unsuccessful campaign in Russia, and
on to the final demise at Waterloo. It was one of the most dramatic periods
of modern European history and demonstrates fully the capabilities of
Centennia.

Feel free to copy or distribute this Working Model as long as it is
unmodified and includes our copyright.

WHAT IS CENTENNIA?

CENTENNIA is a map-based guide to the history of Europe and the Middle
East from the beginning of the 11th century to the present. It is a
spacetime view of western civilization. It displays an evolving,
dynamic map that lets you watch the rise and fall of some of the world's
greatest empires, kingdoms, and nation-states. You can zoom in and
watch a local conflict like the recent Bosnian war following each change
in territory, or zoom out and follow the sweeping changes over the entire
region through the centuries from medieval to modern times.

Unlike traditional historical atlases, Centennia is a continuum of maps
displaying over 9,000 border changes. These changes are efficiently stored
in highly compressed data files so that Centennia occupies less than
3 megabytes on your computer's hard drive.

At any date from 1000AD to August, 1995 (at the time of this writing), you
can stop the shifting map and call up a text narration which explains
events as they occur on-screen. Indexes of important people, places, and
events are linked to the map in space and in time. Nothing else can
provide such a sweeping overview of the important historical events during
the last millennium. Nothing else can place today's complex world events
in their historical context.

From Centennia, you can print striking maps of any date at any scale
for your own use or for presentations. You can import Centennia's
maps into other software to include in an academic paper, an article,
or a family history.

Updates of Centennia for recent events are available approximately every
three months. Registered users can download updates from our web site
http://www.clockwk.com or receive them on disk by mail for a small fee.

WHO USES CENTENNIA?

Centennia is intended for anyone interested in history. Many of our
customers are schools and university history departments. The US Naval
Academy, for example, has made Centennia required course material for
all new students. Many professors use Centennia on classroom projection
screens to display graphically the history discussed in lecture. And about
half of our customers are individuals interested in history outside the
academic world. They use Centennia to place today's headlines, whether
in Bosnia or Northern Ireland or Armenia, in proper historical
perspective.

WILL CENTENNIA RUN ON MY COMPUTER?

There are four versions of the Centennia software at this time.

I. CENTENNIA for Windows/Windows95:
Requires a 486DX/50MHz or faster computer with Windows 3.1 or later.
Your video hardware must be capable of displaying 256 or more colors.
Requires 3 megabytes of hard disk space and 2 meg of available
system memory (RAM). A CD-ROM drive is NOT required.
If you have a 486SX or slower computer with less than 4 megabytes
of RAM, we recommend that you purchase the DOS version instead. Most of the
features of the DOS version are the same as the Windows version, but the
DOS version runs much faster on slower PCs.

II. CENTENNIA for MacOS:
Requires an Apple Macintosh, PowerMac or similar computer running the
Apple Mac Operating System version 7.0 or later. A color monitor is strongly
recommended. Requires 3 megabytes of hard disk space and 2 meg of available
system memory. A CD-ROM drive is NOT required.
A native-mode PowerMac version is included.

III. CENTENNIA for DOS:
Requires an IBM-PC or compatible computer running DOS 3.3 or later
with EGA or VGA graphics capability. It will run fine even on an old 8086
PC but the map speed is best on a 386 or faster. Requires 2.7 megabytes
of hard disk space and 500k of available RAM. A mouse may be helpful, but
all functions can be accessed from the keyboard. A CD-ROM drive is NOT
required.

IV. CENTENNIA Deutsche Version:
The German version of CENTENNIA is marketed by Heureka-Klett
Softwareverlag in Stuttgart Germany. You can reach them by telephone
at +49(711)6672-333.
